The Power Of Online Directories - Pt.2

The Power Of Online Directories - Pt.2

Choosing An Online Directory For Your Business.

Just because you have the freedom to spam your business into every online business directory you find doesn't mean you should. Rather than do that, I would suggest you be more selective and choose popular directories such as Google, Yelp, Bing Places, the Yellow Pages, and of course my directory, Expose Your Business Online.com.

Once you are listed in the big, general directories, you can decide to start listing in more niche specific directories. You can also decide whether to try out paid listing services or not. Of course, your decision to upgrade in any directory should be determined by your budget, your market or demographic and your level of engagement with your customers and prospective customers.

A couple of other things to keep in mind is that, you should try to see what directories your competitors are listed in, and make sure you're listed in them as well. It is also advisable to track your stats with an analytics program like Google analytics, if you have a Google account (and I advise that every entrepreneur to have one). That way, you can see just how much traffic you're getting from your listings, so you can decide on how to monetize.

The Importance of NAP/NAP+W

When listing your business in an online directory, following best practices for NAP (name, address, phone number), and NAP+W (name, address, phone number, and website) is vitally important. Let's see why:

Business Name

The name of your business should appear in the listing exactly as it does on your business cards, letterhead and all your marketing materials.  No additional information is needed. The advantage of this is that, it will help you when you decide to start branding.  It will also prevent confusion and keep your business in the minds of buyers.

Business Address

When listing your business address, make sure you're using an actual physical address and not a P.O. Box number. Even if your business does not require renting space, you should still have an accurate physical address. For example, a plumber or a virtual assistant, a lawn mower or a cleaner do not need to rent a space to conduct their business.  They can run their business right from the comfort of their home but they do need to build trust with the public, and would need a physical address listed correctly.

Phone Number

Your phone number is one of the most important part of your listing.  Make sure your phone number is listed correctly, and that it is answered when people call.  It could be your mobile number if you're the one going to be answering the phone or, an office number if you have an assistant.  In any case, make sure to have a working number to pick up calls during business hours.

Website Information

If you have a website, ensure that the address is listed correctly.  Usually, it is best to link to a page with “more information” than  to a page with  “contact me” or other secondary information page.  That will make it easy for people find out more about your business.  So, try to provide them with that.  If in doubt, use your homepage address which usually give an overview of the business.
