Word-of-mouth advertising has been around throughout the formation of the business world.  While modern day business owners rely on social media to promote their businesses, many old schoolers still use word-of-mouth referrals as their main promotional strategy.  But as effective as it can be, it still has its Pros and Cons.

When considering to use Word-of-mouth advertising as your main strategy, consider also the risks.  It can quickly destroy your business.  Today, business owners are engaged in a “battle” to maintain the reputation of their business.  All over the internet, bad reviews (which is also another form of word-of-mouth) are being written about small business owners, with the intent to put owners out of business.  This if not handled wisely, can lead to significant loss in revenue and ultimately the close of the business.

Although there are experts in reputational management who can help restore your good name,  it is still an ongoing fight because people tend to believe the recommendations of others where purchase is concerned.  So be careful!  Especially if you are running a restaurant or a salon.

Plan well and execute flawlessly.

If your business is one that gives refund, clearly set your refund policy without fine print.

Promptly give the customer their money back if they are not happy with your product.  It is better to give them back their few dollars that spend thousands of dollars cleaning up reputational mess.

If your business doesn’t require a refund, let buyers know right from the start..

No matter how angry a customer gets, don’t show malice or become personal.  Stay composed and let your response exhibit calmness.

It is your business and you have your reputation to protect.
